Ribeira Grande

Santo Antão, Cape Verde

Nestled in a valley of the same name, Ribeira Grande is a cozy but stunning city on the Santo Antao island. The winding streets here are as charming as the small restaurants and guesthouses that occupy them. The attractions for tourists include a lively food market and a clothes market, as well as the Nossa Senhora, do Rosario church. For relaxation, try the hot springs in the city which are a popular tourist attraction but also retain a calm and natural feel.

Although the island was already discovered in 1462, the first evidence of settlement dates from 1548. The main settlement was Ribeira Grande, which became the seat of the municipality of Santo Antão in 1732.

Its earlier buildings are built with Portuguese colonial architecture. The church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário is the parish church.

Tourism in Cape Verde

Cape Verde is a country in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of western Africa. It comprises a group of islands of the Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. It is part of the region of Islands collectively known as Macaronesia.

The islands of Cape Verde have a pleasant climate during most of the year with 350 days of sunshine, and some of them offer impressive mountain scenery as well. Diving, windsurfing, sailing, and trekking are available to tourists. Some ecotourism is developing on the islands of São Nicolau, Santiago, and Boa Vista.[6] For tourists interested in cultural topics, the town of Cidade Velha on the island of Santiago has declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, but cultural tourism has not been particularly promoted up to now.

The visa policy of Cape Verde requires visas for tourists from most of the world. Recently, however, a visa exemption for European Union citizens, citizens of the United States and Canada, and citizens of European countries outside the Schengen Area has been implemented and took effect on 1 January 2019.
